request for the next show.
The Jalapeño Mix showcases the "hits" in the
Tejano Golden Oldies, Tejano Classics and the Old School categories.
Combine all of these musical ingredients into one on a Sunday
afternoon and you have the ultimate "Oldies Show", The Jalapeño
Mix!
Requests and dedications play a big part in the show's
appeal and consequently contributes to the show's ever-growing popularity.
In fact the show's popularity has spawned several independent
clubs and organizations that make the Jalapeño Mix their
primary source of listening enjoyment on a "Sunday afternoon".
One of the most interesting clubs is The Jalapeñitos,
which consists of elementary school-age kids, and younger, that
like the Old School classics. Usually the parents and grandparents
have a lot to do with introducing this specific generation to
music that played an important part in their parents and grandparents'
life. Usually the adults dedicate songs to the kids and than later
the kids start dedicating to their parents and family and friends
songs like "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero", "Madresita",
"Somebody Loves You", "Angelito", "Angel
Baby" and other songs that say what you feel.
Another club is the Jalapeño Rock Friends which is made
up of friends, family and neighbors that live in a specific city
block in Lubbock, Texas. Their main goal is "to expand the
show's listenership to eventually encompass an entire neighborhood
and create weekly 'get-togethers' and reminisce with 'los vecinos'".
These are just a two of many groups of families and friends that
get together every Sunday to enjoy the "oldies", BBQ
and their favorite refreshments. Entire "familias", along with their
compadres, comadres, abuelito y abuelita call in faithfully every
Sunday, just to let Gilbert know that they are tuning in, and
to send them their favorite oldies "over the air".
Also,
several car clubs cruise up and down the main streets, including
North University in Lubbock, and call in to request their favorite
"oldies tune", dedicating a specific tune to their "homies,
jefes, jefas y rucas" and not necessarily in that order.
One particular car club has made the Jalapeño Mix their
official "Oldies" station during their weekly "get-togethers"
at Rogers Park, never failing to call in and dedicate an oldie
to everyone that's in attendance at their weekly BBQ's.
Young,
and especially the adult listeners, love the show and will occasionally
call in to request a specific song that takes them "on a cruise down
memory lane and remember when life was a bit more simpler and
slower.
" Love songs are never lacking
during the Jalapeno Mix. In fact, Gilbert has made several "surprise"
marriage proposals from one person to another "on the air". As of
date, there has not been one instance that a marriage proposal
was rejected. And to sweeten the proposal, the show's host will
usually dedicate the couple a love song to ensure a "yes!"
